Skid plates and sump guards for trail and adventure motorcycles, designed to protect the underside of the engine and lower frame from stones, scraping and contact with the terrain. At Non Stop Bikes, we select these guards based on their coverage, construction, mounting points and compatibility. We help you choose according to your routes and fitted accessories, while also considering maintenance access and ground clearance.
Skid plates and sump guards for trail and adventure motorcycles
Skid plates for trail and adventure motorcycles add protection between the underside of the motorcycle and the terrain. Their purpose is to help protect the areas they cover against flying stones, scraping and certain impacts when riding on tracks and trails.
At Non Stop Bikes, we help you compare sump guards according to your motorcycle and intended use. When choosing, check which components are covered, how the guard is mounted and whether it can be used with your existing crash bars, exhaust or stand.
When is it worth fitting a skid plate?
Tracks and terrain with obstacles
When riding on tracks with stones, ruts or changes in level, the underside of the motorcycle is more exposed to contact with the ground. For this use, consider a guard designed for those demands, with suitable coverage and a suitable mounting system.
Before replacing the original guard, check its features and the actual differences offered by the alternative. A larger part does not, by itself, guarantee more suitable protection.
Touring and mixed riding
If you combine road riding with occasional off-road tracks, weigh up coverage against added weight and ease of maintenance. On long trips, being able to clean the space between the guard and the engine and inspect the fixings is also useful.
Road use does not eliminate exposure to stones or objects on the carriageway, although protection requirements may differ from those of frequent off-road use.
Which parts of the motorcycle does a skid plate protect?
Coverage depends on the design and the motorcycle. Some guards focus on the underside of the engine; others extend around the sides or towards specific areas of the exhaust and frame.
Protection for the water pump, engine side covers or suspension linkage should only be considered included when the manufacturer specifies it for that product reference. Not all skid plates protect the same components.
Check photographs of the fitted product and its description to identify which areas it covers. A skid plate does not automatically replace crash bars or other dedicated guards either.
Materials used in trail motorcycle skid plates
Aluminium skid plates
Aluminium is used in guards with different thicknesses, shapes and reinforcements. When comparing them, check the overall construction and mounting brackets, as well as weight and coverage. Plate thickness is useful information, but it does not, on its own, describe how the complete guard performs.
HDPE plastic skid plates
HDPE, or high-density polyethylene, is also used in guards for trail and adventure motorcycles. Designs developed for off-road use take advantage of its flexibility and its behaviour when sliding against obstacles.
Not all plastic guards have the same purpose or features. Check the material, thickness and intended use in the product information rather than assuming that any plastic part is equivalent to an HDPE skid plate designed for this purpose.
Compatibility and fitting on your motorcycle
A guard must match the motorcycle’s model, year and version. Even within the same model family, the exhaust, mounting brackets or available space beneath the engine may differ.
Before buying, check:
- The exact fitment specified by the manufacturer.
- The mounting points and brackets required.
- Compatibility with crash bars and the centre stand.
- Restrictions relating to non-original exhausts or headers.
- The kit contents and supplied fitting hardware.
- Ground clearance with the guard fitted.
Use the mounting points and procedure specified for that product reference. Do not force the fit or modify brackets to adapt a part whose compatibility has not been confirmed.
Cleaning and maintaining the sump guard
After a ride, check whether mud or stones have accumulated between the skid plate and the motorcycle. Also inspect the fixings and check for cracks, deformation or contact with components that should remain separated.
After a substantial impact, inspect both the guard and its mounting brackets. For oil changes and other maintenance tasks, some designs allow access without removal, while others need to be taken off.
Frequently asked questions about trail motorcycle skid plates
Does a belly pan offer the same protection as a skid plate?
This should not be assumed. A belly pan may serve as a fairing or cosmetic component without being designed to withstand impacts against the ground. Check the product’s stated purpose, construction and mounting points before treating it as protection for off-road use.
Can I keep the crash bars already fitted?
It depends on the specific combination. Some crash bars share mounting points or space with the skid plate. Check compatibility between both product references, even if each is separately advertised as compatible with your motorcycle.
Is aluminium or HDPE the better choice?
The choice depends on the complete product and its intended use. Compare coverage, weight, construction, fixings and maintenance. The material alone does not establish that one option is always better than the other.
